Yeah I know it’s not console related, but there’s precious little tech news to speak of right now. I mean, do you really want me to write about how Happy Feet sold 1.8 million copies across all platforms? That’s news right now. For those of you that don’t know, that’s a lot of copies of a game, particularly so bad and based on such a terrible movie. That movie was so bad I punched the gentleman sitting next to me after the movie because he was sporting a tuxedo. Next to him was a man in tap shoes; I jumped on his feet. That’ll teach ‘em. Also, the iPhone is pretty sweet. It comes in 2 sizes, 4GB and 8GB models. It plays music, movies (in widescreen!) and shows photos. It can browse the web. It features no actual buttons on the phone and uses a touch screen instead that dynamically changes based on what you’re doing. In the example IGN gave the phone would turn off movie and music playback if you put the phone to your ear, anticipating a phone call. Sure it costs as much as a Playstation 3 at $499 for the 4 GB model and $599 for the 8GB one and sure it requires a 2 year agreement with Cingular, but can you really put a price on cool? You may not be able to, but Apple sure can. You have to wonder how much longer Apple will be able to keep their stranglehold on stylish, mainstream technological gizmos. The second someone comes along with the next big thing Apple’s iEmpire is going to be kaput! Also, Apple got themselves sued yesterday over the name by Cisco systems. Apparently Cisco had a trademark on the name and has had it since 2000. They used it to brand a line of phones and released them just a few weeks ago. The two companies had been working toward a licensing agreement but never reached one. Hours before Steve Jobs announced the iPhone talks broken down between the two and Cisco had given Apple until the end of the day to finalize an agreement. Apple let the deadline pass and Cisco filed suit. It sounds pretty cut and dry, but who knows how long these two corporations will drag it out in court? The IGN post is about the Phone and News24 is about the suit. If no new news comes along by next week you can expect more penguin hate along with something about World of Warcraft taking over the world. |
