Games Win (in Illinois)! |

There was a law similar to the ones in Michigan, California, and the one proposed by the two senators above in effect in Illinois. It was shot down yesterday, the judge maintaining that games are considered speech protected by the first amendment. "In this country, the state lacks the authority to ban protected speech on the ground that it affects the listener's or observer's thoughts and attitudes," Judge Matthew Kennelly wrote in his decision. A law was going to be proposed to the Oklahoma state legislature using the Illinois law as a basis. I guess they’d better re-think their proposal, eh?

N-Gage N-…Dead? |

If you don’t remember what an N-Gage is, I’ll refresh your memory. It’s a handheld gaming device that doubled as a phone that was originally released in 2003 and was promptly considered to be a joke in the eyes of the video game community. Heck, I’m personally sorry if you ever received one. If you ever actually purchased one, I feel pity and shame for you. It gets worse though; over the weekend, Nokia executives implied that they would slowly stop producing and marketing (Not that they market it now, but…) the system, at least in the states. "The company intends to continue producing N-Gage devices primarily for the Chinese and Indian markets," though. So, if you live in one of those territories, take comfort in the fact that your system of choice will be around for a bit longer. A small PSA though – if you live in the Chinese or Indian territories, you should know that you’re reading a website in Fresno, California. We’re on the other side of the planet! There’s no way our game news is the same as yours!

More Xbox 360’s in Stores Before Christmas? |

With Microsoft’s Xbox 360 about to be launched in Europe (December 2) and Japan (12/10), it would appear that all hope is lost for those of us in the states that want the new system (Sorry India and China, you’re out of luck too. Have fun with those N-Gages though!). But have no fear! Microsoft has announced (read: is lying to our faces) that their new "weekly replenishment strategy" is now in effect. I originally assumed that the strategy was for them to sit idly by while we all hear about how our buddy Mike, who’s friend’s cousin just got one, gets to play with it all the time. But I stand corrected! This weekly replenishment strategy, which Microsoft apparently invented, means that there should be new systems on store shelves by the end of the week or the weekend. No one knows exactly how many systems will be available but if you intend to shop locally, it would probably be in your best interest to call around to major retailers in your area to see if you can find out exactly when stores are getting their systems. Best of luck, holiday shoppers!

Quick Reviews! |

It’s a barren wasteland of news this week, so we’re going to try something different. We’re going to give you a quick rundown of the Xbox360 launch titles. Ready? Good.
NBA Live 2006 – EA removed several game modes, like Dynasty and Slam Dunk Contest, so that their game would hit retail on launch day. That means you’re paying 10 bucks more than the new version on It looks great though.
Condemned: Criminal Origins – It’s good looking, creepy, and really not for children under the age of thirty. It’s gritty and gory, though a bit short. If you want to scare the living daylights out of yourself, this is the game for you.
Perfect Dark Zero – It has an awful story, but is that really what you bought it for? It has a fun, though at times sluggish one player campaign and some really cool online play. If you plan on using an Xbox Live Gold Subscription, this will be the game to get.
Quake 4 – just like the other Quake games and Doom before it, it’s dumb, good looking fun.
Project Gotham Racing 3 – If you didn’t like the other PGRs, this one isn’t going to change your mind. If you’ve never tried it, give it a shot. It’s the only 360-exclusive racer, and it’s pretty derned fun.
King Kong – It looks and sounds great, so make sure you have a good Hi-Def TV and stereo system to show this one off on. It is very fun, though quite short and a little buggy.
Kameo – Pretty good in all aspects, though it is short and is definitely an acquired taste. Not all of you will enjoy the Mario/Zelda-ish play mechanics, even if they do feel a bit Mario/Zelda-ish. Rent it first.
Everything else – is a port, so if you have it on another system you really don’t need to get it. If you don’t have it, check the reviews.

Defective Xbox 360’s? |

There are many reports circulating (On the internet. Where else?) of Xbox 360’s having several problems ranging from games that freeze and systems that overheat to games being scratched by the system itself. While we’re all sure that some of the reports are true, we at BRE won’t be cautioning every Tom Dick and Harry not to buy a 360. What’s more, Microsoft has laid out a pretty impressive return system. Just call them at 1-800-4MY-XBOX and the house that Gates built will overnight you a shipping box that you can put your 360 in and ship back to Microsoft for them to either fix or replace it. Microsoft estimates the time for replacement at about 5 days.
