Nintendo Revolution Renamed “Wii.” Wait, WHAT?! Print E-mail
Written by Chase
Wii.  That’s the name of Nintendo’s new console.  Not “Revolution.”  That was just a code name.  No, I’m not joking.  I guess they revealed this little tidbit of information this week so as not to detract from any other new developments with their new console at E3.  And they’d better have some great developments, because the name is just laughable, at least in the states.

Now, Nintendo is not dumb.  They actually have reasons for their name, corny as they may be.  According to the official Wii website, “Wii sounds like ‘we,’ which emphasizes this console is for everyone.  Wii can be easily remembered around the world no matter what language they speak.”  Gamespot thought it was worth noting that “ii” in Japanese means “good.”

Nintendo does have high expectations for its console, no matter how corny they may be.  “And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.  So that’s Wii.  But now Nintendo needs you.  Because, it’s really not about you or me.  It’s about Wii.  And together, Wii will change everything.”  Lofty expectations from the company that brought us the Virtual Boy.  Of course, this doesn’t make the system any less competent, at least to those of us that know what the system is and what it’s capable of.  But it does make it a possible disaster in the eyes of the uninformed consumer.  Analysts have mixed opinions, but mine is that this name is corny and stupid.  Then again, so was the Xbox 360 and it’s still selling.

How Many Resident Evil Films Do You Need? Print E-mail
Written by Chase
Yeah, they’re pretty bad, but we watch ‘em anyway.  The Resident Evil movies are just too enticing for game fans to not watch.  The third film is going to be filmed starting next month with a 2007 release.  Written by the blessing and curse of game based movies, Paul W.S. Anderson, the movie will see the return of the surviving members of the cast of Apocolypse.  Even though this new movie, titled Resident Evil: Afterlife hasn’t even begun filming, a fourth movie is in the works.  Hollywood is just that confident that we’ll watch anything based on a videogame (and really, they’re right).

Liberty City Stories Delayed? Print E-mail

Grand Theft Auto games are the same thing over and over again, but you people keep buying it.  I’ll never understand I guess.  A small victory for me, who hates you people (just kidding!), supposedly came today in the form of a delay for the Playstation 2 version of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.  Apparently a representative for Rockstar Games is saying that the game won’t be out now until at least late May.  Sad story!  You’ll just have to play one of many other high quality games on the market until then.  BWA HA!  That’s my evil laugh.  You like?

IEMA, VSDA to Merge, Assimilate Congress Print E-mail
Written by Chase
The Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (say it five times in rapid succession.  GO!) and the Video Software Dealers Association have announced that they will merge.  These two associations cover a multitude of merchants that sell DVDs, console games and various other types of software.  You really only see their names in the news in response to a new game-restriction law or other slam on videogames or the industry.  IGN says that the new, single entity will be “like Voltron, only made up of humans instead of robot lions.”  I was hoping for something a little bit more menacing, something that would strike fear in to the hearts of congress.  How about a 535 headed lion-shark beast? You like that imagery?  Me too.
